My husband’s favorite beauty products!

I’m coming up on 10 years with my (now) husband, Frank! We will be marking a decade together and one year married this April. What wisdom can I impart on a lasting relationship? None, probably! But I will say that we are always open to learning from each other, and I think that is a strong quality. We are always teaching each other stuff. It is as if we are both aliens from two different planets, hiding out on earth together in an apartment where Grace Coddington’s dreamy memoir and ‘Too Big To Fail’ live on the same bookshelf. 

Over the years, I have taught Frank a ton about self-care and beauty products. Whether he knows it or not, he has access to the best! If he gets a pimple, I have a patch for him. If he thinks he is getting a pimple, I zap it with a high frequency wand. When he runs out of face wash, I have something good for him to use. When we go on vacation, he uses really nice sunblock. 

I have to say, he has a solid routine! But, it wasn’t easy getting him here, and it took many years of making the same requests, like ‘please wear sunblock and a hat’ and ‘stop using Clean & Clear!’ I think we’ve made it. Here is everything in my hot husband’s long time rotation - mostly inherited, stolen, and strongly suggested by me!

Ursa Major Fantastic Face Wash 

“Why do I like my face wash? I really like the smell. It says it smells like cedar but I don’t really know what cedar smells like” - Frank

I learned all about Ursa Major and their fabulous products when I used to get monthly facials at Heyday. It was recommended to me by my esthetician and is a solid cleanser if you have combination skin. It smells like a margarita (contrary to the subject’s opinion) and doesn’t dry your face out.

Klorane Soothing Shampoo with Peony

“I really like the smell and it makes my scalp feel nice (Editor’s note: Not itch)” - Frank

One of the best lines I got to try when I worked in beauty was Klorane, it was the first time I used shampoo and thought “oh shit!” When their peony line for sensitive scalps launched, I got to bring home a petal pink shampoo, conditioner, and a soothing scalp spray. My beauty job supplied us with so much shampoo we almost never needed to buy it, but this pretty peony shampoo inspired many, many repurchases.

REPLICA Jazz Club by Maison Margiela

"It goes well with the food I like to eat and drink. Reminds me of going out on a Friday night!" - Frank

This scent is sexy on everyone! We stayed at American Beech in Greenport, NY, and their bathrooms were filled with Replica Jazz Club hand soaps, shampoos, and conditioners. Frank was shocked to learn that this is also a very famous fragrance. It’s been his signature scent ever since! 

P.S. If you ever get to Greenport, you must visit American Beech’s Black Llama Bar! It’s so glamorous, and the ladies of RHONY fought there once.

Salt & Stone Natural Deodorant Santal & Vetiver

"Aesop is better for the summer, when you are going out to dinner. This one (Salt & Stone) is for when you are actually doing stuff. It is more robust." - Frank

We often find ourselves on 5th avenue in Park Slope, which was recently named “the coolest block in New York City.” I don’t agree with that, but maybe it’s because I am over there too much. I'm always shopping at Housing Works and buying sandwiches at Russo’s, which is a dog day afternoon if you ask me! Frank would like to let you know he owns a Russo’s t-shirt.

5th Avenue is also the street where Frank's love affair with expensive deodorant began when he tried this one from Aesop. It smelled so good on him, but the consistency is light and watery. It didn’t last long, and for my practical husband, this just didn’t make economic sense.

I wanted to try Salt + Stone so I bought him a stick in a scent I thought he would like. Sometimes it is just that easy. Neroli & Basil is my favorite.

O’Keefe’s Lip Repair Night Treatment

"It is really good, but it makes me think of O’Keefe from The Fighter, the boxing movie." - Frank

Two summers ago, on the 4th of July, we went to the movies to see Top Gun: Maverick after recovering from Covid. It was easily one of the most ridiculous movies I have ever seen. The fastest speed ever recorded by a human pilot was mach 6.7, but Tom Cruise goes over mach 10! It makes no sense, stop making movies that make men think they can fly planes by watching YouTube videos!

Anyway, we ate really salty popcorn and then went to Colina Verde after Top Gun for spicy ceviche tostadas and spicier margaritas. This misadventure made Frank’s lips dry, and they were resurrected by O’Keefe’s lip repair, lovingly referred to as 'Mr. O’Queef' in our household.

Other honorable mentions include Dr Teal's Body Wash with Pure Epsom Salt, American Crew Pomade (he keeps buying counterfeit versions by accident on Amazon), and La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer.

So there you have it! My husband uses lip balm. With access to everything, he wants (almost) nothing, but I think we are in a good place. Maybe one day I can get him to use retinol, but until then - the quest continues!
